Bernard Leon "Mutt" Gritten

July 7, 1924 — August 15, 2012

Bernard L. Mutt Gritten, 88 of Covington, IN went to be with The Lord on Wednesday August 15, 2012 at the Waters of Covington.

Bernard was born July 7, 1924 in Harveysburg, IN, son of Alva and Evalina (Shoaf) Gritten. He married Nellie P. Wilson on August 4, 1946. They were married for 66 years, and she survives.

Bernard is survived by 2 daughters, Suzanne (Mark) Burfield of Veedersburg, Diane (David) Haehl of Shelbyville, and a son, Randy (Pam) Gritten of Crawfordsville, 10 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, a baby sister and a brother.

Bernard graduated from Kingman High School. He served his country in World War II for almost 3 years. He was in the 1st group of 18 year old boys that were drafted during World War II on April 14, 1943.


He was in Service Company of the 194th Glider Infantry of the 17th Airborne Division. He was in the Battle of the Bulge & crossed the Rhine River in a glider. He was later in the 82nd Airborne and was in the Victory Parade in New York. He drove a jeep for Colonel Pierce.

He loved being a truck driver for Yeddo Grain Company. He loved his family, mushrooming, fishing and eating homemade ice cream.
Bernard was a member of Stringtown Church of God and helped with many building projects down through the years. He was a member of Kingman American Legion for many years.

A celebration of Bernards life will be held at Stringtown Church of God on Saturday August 18, 2012 from 1:00 p. m. until time of services at 3:00 p. m. Burial will be in Kingman Fraternal Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion. Memorials may be made in Bernards name to Stringtown Church of God Building Fund.
