Darrell Jahvan Payne, 60, of Covington Indiana, passed away at 10:56 a.m. Tuesday December 20, 2011, at his home after a long hard battle with lung cancer.
He was born on September 15, 1951 in Crawfordsville Indiana to Alice Brasker Payne and the late Vernon Payne.
He married Nancy Virginia Graves on May 29, 1971 in Gessie, Indiana, she survives. Also surviving is his mother, Alice Payne of Covington, four children: Chad (Dana) Payne of Brownsburg, IN, Kyle Payne of Terre haute IN, Toby Payne, and Mandy (Matt) Payne-Sansouci of Covington, IN, Two sisters, Vana Payne of Brandon, FL and Lisa (Kelly) Fudge of Covington, IN, one brother, Brad (Debbie) Payne of Gainesville, GA, six grandchildren: Bayli, Blade, Ashley, Cody, Matthew and Kaden and a very special dog daisy.
Darrell was a 1969 graduate of Danville High School and DACC. He retired after working 29 years at the Olin/Flexel plant in Covington. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed visiting local casinos. His favorite pastime was watching NASCAR. He had attended the Daytona 500 for the last 40 years with his friends, cheering on his favorite driver, Tony Stewart.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p m Friday, December 23, 2011 at Shelby Funeral Home in Covington, with Jerry Hale officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Serenity Hospice.
