Donald Richard Deschene, 84, of Covington, IN and formerly of Champaign, IL, passed away at 3:40 P. M. Tuesday November 17, 2015 at Presence USMC in Danville, IL.
Donald was born November 21, 1930 in Argyle, MN the son of the late Alec and Clara (Morin) Deschene.
Donald married Theresa M. Ralph July 1, 1950 in Springfield, IL. She preceded him in death February 15, 2005.
Survivors include three sons, Steven (Alicia) Deschene of Grand Marais, MN, James Deschene of Covington, IN, and Daniel (Yuki) Deschene of Morgan Hill, CA: five daughters, Mary Deschene of San Mateo, CA, Patricia (Grant Sawyer) Deschene of Portland, OR, Barbara (Neal) Gardiner of Colorado Springs, CO, Nancy (Mitch) Hansen of Grand Prairie, IL., and Janice Deschene of Portland, OR; eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Noella (Frank) Sherwood of Springfield, IL.
Donald was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Deschene, Phillip Deschene; and a sister Lorraine Carstens.
Donald grew up in Argyle, MN and enlisted in the Navy after graduating from high school. He served on the USS Midway during the Korean War where he worked as a radio technician. He had two sons while stationed in Middleton, KY and a third son while stationed in Orlando, FL. He was discharged from the Navy in 1955 and moved to Champaign, IL to go to college, but the birth of his first daughter made him seek employment instead of school. He worked for 30 years as an Electronics Technician for the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign at the Coordinated Science Laboratory.
He was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church while living in Champaign and volunteered for many activities with his wife at the church after his retirement. He also did volunteer work at Mercy Hospital (now Covenant) in Urbana and with the hospital auxiliarys resale shop.
Visitation will be 9:45 A. M. to 10:45 A. M. EST Saturday November 21, 2015 at Shelby Funeral Home, 622 Third Street, Covington, IN. Mass will be conducted by Father Samuel Futral at 11:00 A. M. EST at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Third and Pearl Streets, Covington.
Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, IL at 11:00 A. M. CST Monday November 23, 2015. Condolences to the family: www.shelbyfuneralhome.com. Visitation
