Second Timothy 4:7 says, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
On December 19th, 2025, Frank David Gushurst III, at Fountain Springs in Covington, Indiana, finished his race here on earth, having fought the good fight and kept the faith well. He no doubt heard the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant,” from His precious Lord and Savior, whom he lived to please and serve so faithfully, as he entered His eternal presence.
His life’s journey began on Wednesday, August 19, 1931, in Marion, Ohio, born to the late Frank David Gushurst and Etta Mae Cleveland Krautter Gushurst. He grew up in a loving and humble home where God, the Bible, and his godly parents would provide the firm foundation and shape the man he would later become. He was also loved and guided by his four sisters who preceded him in death: Esther Wilson, Anna Richeson, Grace Osborne, and Mary Josephine Gushurst. After High School, he worked for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad from March 1951 to June 1964. During his time on the Railroad, he answered the call to proudly serve his country in the United States Air Force from September 1951 to August 1955 during the Korean War. After working on the Railroad and serving his country, he spent the rest of his career in TeleCommunications, where he retired in 1994.
On April 27, 1957, Frank married Mary Lois Heaton, who preceded him in death on September 10, 2006. Frank and Mary were united in their love for one another and their love for their Lord and Savior. They shared their passion with the children of Burnett Church in Terre Haute, where they did children's ministry. The seeds they planted and the impact on countless lives of children no doubt live on and are bearing fruit even today.
Later in life, God gave Frank a new purpose and assignment by using him to volunteer with hospice. He became the hands and feet of Jesus, bringing comfort and openly sharing the hope that is found in Christ alone with those who were at the end of their life journey. He did this while he traveled along his own path of grief and healing from losing his beloved wife, Mary, setting before us the example of what it means to walk in the strength of the Lord even when our own hearts are heavy. He also continued his work in Children’s Ministry at Waterman Baptist Church in Kingman, Indiana. Many kids thought the world of “Mr. Frank” who told them missionary stories. He also enjoyed many hours of spending time with his son-in-law, Chuck Spiering, who preceded him in death in August of 2015. Frank’s godly wisdom, unapologetic faith, pure heart, gentle spirit, and wit will live on, bringing great comfort and continued guidance for all who were blessed to have known this dear man of God.
The baton of his legacy and faith has been passed on to all who follow behind. Those who remain to cherish Frank’s memory are: his three daughters, Brenda Spiering in Covington, Indiana, Barb (John) Manicke in Alvin, Illinois, and Karen Gushurst in West Lafayette; Five Grandchildren, Will (Mandy) Myers, Aaron (Snezhana) Myers, Daniel (Andrea) Myers, Jessica (Jaron) Oleniczak, Mike Manicke and family, Rachel (Darrell) Elder and family; and Gabrielle Gushurst; Great-grandchildren, Clara, Eli, Elizabeth Myers; Jacob and Gideon Myers, CharlieMae, and Addy Myers; and Aibreann Winship. He also had many nieces and nephews whose lives were greatly impacted and touched by their sweet Uncle Frank.
Frank’s family would like to thank all of the staff at the Fountain Springs for taking such good care of our Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, and Uncle, and making his final years enjoyable and so special. In his final days, Southern Care Hospice Services were amazing.
