Mary Katherine McConnell
August 15, 1931 — September 7, 2016
Mary K. (Unekis) McConnell, 85, of Covington passed this world peacefully at 8:40 A. M. Wednesday September 7, 2016 at the Waters of Covington. She had been seriously ill the past two weeks. Mary was born in Westville, IL to Joseph and Eva (Kelly) Unekis on August 15, 1931.
Mary attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Schlarman High School, Danville, IL in 1949. She attended Utterback & Brown School of Business after high school and worked at Barkman Chevrolet. Mary met Edsel McConnell, and they were married on December 21, 1951. They reared five children: Eleanor McConnell (deceased), Janet Lewis, Covington, Mary Ann Eades (Carl), Crawfordsville, Barbara Yoho, Eugene, and Edsel McConnell (Mary Jo), Fishers, IN.
Mary had two brothers, Richard Unekis, deceased, and Joseph (Shirly) Unekis of Manhattan, KS. Mary has eleven grandchildren: Dave (Amanda) Eades, Jerot Eades, Jennifer (Doug) Sutherlin, A. J. (Jess) Lewis, Andy (Samantha) Yoho, Kelly (Phil) Mobley, Emily (Kyle) Ross, Eric McConnell, Zack (Amanda) McConnell, Cody McConnell, and Mariah McConnell. There are also eleven great grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, daughter, and brother preceded her in death.
Mary’s interests were reading, sewing, traveling, genealogy, flowers, and all her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She encouraged all to do well in school.
Mary worked for the Commercial News as a secretary, then staff writer for about fifteen years. She had a great interest in local history and enjoyed writing about different people locally.
A celebration of her life will be Saturday September 10, 2016 at 4:00 P. M. EDT at Shelby Funeral Home with Pastor Eddy Jones officiating. Visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00 P. M. before the services. Per her wishes cremation after the services with burial at Resurrection Cemetery, Danville, IL at a later date. Her wishes are donations to the Covington Community Foundation or the American Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers with envelopes available at Shelby Funeral Home.
