Melvin Goodwin

October 1, 1942 — January 6, 2024

Covington

Melvin Goodwin, 81, died peacefully on Saturday, January 6, 2024 surrounded by family at the Williamsport, IN hospital.  Born October 1, 1942, the son of Edward and Alice Goodwin in Danville, IL, Melvin was a former member of the Air Force, Little League coach, and Chemical Operator at Eli Lilly in Clinton, IN, retiring in 1998 to spend his time doing the things he loved most, watching old westerns, yelling at the Cubs, and fishing.  Melvin was a dedicated family man who will spend eternity questioning the moves of the Cubs management and looking down over Lake Cumberland, KY, bemoaning the fact that it gets too crowded on the weekends to fish.  Melvin was rarely seen without his best friend and the true love of his life, Effie Goodwin, whom he married December 14, 1968 and spent nearly every day by her side for the next 5 ½ decades. Mel and Effie recently returned to Covington after many years of fishing on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky and Lake Okeechobee in Florida.

Melvin was survived by his wife of 55 years, Effie Goodwin of Covington, sons, Dusty (Elisha) Goodwin of Attica, and Rusty (Bethany) Goodwin of Terre Haute, grandchildren, Reed and Adyson of Attica, and Ryne, Avery, and Maddyn of Terre Haute, and brother, Wayne (Peggy) Goodwin of Wilmore, KY.  Melvin feared nothing except that his sons would bury him in a tie, so he has chosen to be cremated with no service because he just did not want the fuss.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Attica High School Athletics department, 211 E Sycamore, Attica IN 47918.

Arrangements entrusted to Shelby & Keller Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 622 Third Street, Covington, IN  47932.  (765) 793-2221  www.shelbykellerfh.com.
