Norma Marie Newman, 89, of Lafayette, IN, died at 7:15 p. m. Sunday, December 29, 2013 at her home.
She was born August 21, 1924 near Homer, IL, the daughter of Lester and Joetta (Johnston) Edens. She graduated from Homer High School and Utterback Brown Business College in Danville, IL.
Norma married Kenneth Lowell Newman on March 2, 1947 at Homer, IL. He died January 3, 1999.
She lived on their family farm near Stone Bluff from 1947 until 1997, before she moved to Covington, IN. She moved to Rosewalk Commons in Lafayette in 2009.
She was a member of the Osborn Prairie Church for many years, the Covington United Methodist Church in recent years, the Fountain County Home Economics Club, and Farm Bureau. She was employed at Fountain Trust Company as a bookkeeper in Covington from 1969 to 1990.
Surviving is son Kenneth Craig (Sue) Newman of Mt. Carmel, IL and daughter Kristy Sue Sporre (Kris) Davis of Lafayette, IN; sister Doris (Newt) Wright of Assumption, IL; sister-in-law Mary Edens of Casey, IL; six grandchildren, Kenneth Scott (Ellen) Newman of Nashville, TN, Katie (Sean) ORouke of St Louis, MO, Meredith (Dan) Pearson of Dayton, OH, Laura Newman of Austin, TX, Kyle (Heidi) Sporre of Minneapolis, MN, Gregory Sporre of West Lafayette, IN; and six great grandchildren: Brady and Dylan Sporre, Jack and Caroline Newman, Colin ORourke and Hunter Kenneth Pearson. Her parents, four brothers, three sisters, a son-in-law and granddaughter preceded her in death.
Norma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother being especially proud of her six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She enjoyed farm life, her Family, Purdue sports, and playing cards for many years with their card group. She lived her life as a devoted Christian role model and her kind and pleasant nature will be missed by all who knew her. She recently enjoyed a special 89th birthday celebration in which all of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren shared many pictures and memories.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. EST Saturday at Shelby Funeral Home, Covington. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. EST at Shelby Funeral Home with Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Osborn Prairie Cemetery at a later date.
