Virgil Leroy Sweet

April 27, 1927 — June 7, 2023

Virgil Leroy Sweet, 96, of Largo, Florida passed away on June 7, 2023. He was born on April 27, 1927, the son of Charles Leroy and Cora (Lewis) Sweet.  Virgil married Paralee Young July 19, 1953 at Covington, IN, who preceded him in death February 5, 1999.  He was a cherished father to Shari Moon and Sandy Mitsos, and a loving grandfather to Michael Mitsos, Daria Beddard, and Eric Moon. He also had six great-grandchildren.

Virgil was a respected basketball coach who began his career at Covington High School and later coached at Valparaiso High School for 25 years. He was highly regarded by coaches all over the country and was actively involved in several basketball associations throughout his life. He was even inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Virgil was dearly loved by family and friends and led an active lifestyle up until the time he passed. He enjoyed playing tennis, walking the beach, and watching and attending sporting events.

Virgil served in the Navy during World War II and was proud of his military service. He was a 1945 graduate of Covington High School.  He obtained his higher education from Eastern Illinois University and Indiana University.

A private memorial service will be held in Covington, Indiana, with details on a future celebration of life to be announced. The family requests that memorials be made to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Leadership and Character Award, which was started by Virgil in 2011.
