William Lewis Smail

February 27, 1923 — October 23, 2022

William “Bill” Lewis Smail, 99, died Sunday October 23, 2022 at Autumn Trace in Attica, IN.  He was born in Covington, IN on February 27, 1923 to William Sherman and Lennie Leon (Holycross) Smail.  He married Carol Dennis on January 16,1943.  She preceded him in death October 27, 2012.  He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Fauniel Furr, Connie Coffman, and Eugene “Lennie” Smail.

He is survived by his sister Anita Kronst of Burbonnais, IL, two sons, Dennis (Joyce) Smail of Lexington, KY, Jan (Priscilla) Smail of Covington, IN, and two grandchildren, Chris (Angela) Smail of Plainfield, IN, and Catherine Richards of Covington, four grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

Bill was a life resident of Covington and graduated from Covington High School in 1941.  He played basketball and was an avid Trojan fan.  He loved to play golf and go fishing.  A proud Army veteran of World War II, Bill served in Europe.  He retired from General Electric in 1983 after thirty years of employment and spent a long happy retirement wintering in Florida, traveling the world with Carol, and writing his memoir “Life and Times of Williams L. Smail, a Life Worth Singing About”.  He organized and led the Covington Men’s Barbershop Chorus “SPEBSQSA” , and sang in several quartets, and the church choir as a member of Covington United Methodist Church.

Funeral services 2:00 P. M. Thursday October 27, 2022 at Shelby Funeral Home, Covington with Rev. Noel Whiteman officiating.  Visitation 12:00 P. M. until time of services at 2:00 P. M.  Burial in Mount Hope Cemetery with military services by the Army and Veedersburg American Legion.  Memorials to the Covington Community Foundation or the donor’s choice.
